What the Exam Covers

The exam has five domains. Security, monitoring and optimization, and high availability and disaster recovery each have the highest weight band. Prepare across all five: deployment knowledge alone will not cover the operational decisions the exam measures.

Plan and implement data platform resources — 15-20%

Choosing between Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server deployments; automated deployment methods; Azure Arc and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric use cases; hybrid deployments and patching; scaling, partitioning, sharding and compression; online and offline migrations, moving between Azure SQL services, Managed Instance database copy and move, and migration troubleshooting.

Implement a secure environment — 20-25%

Microsoft Entra authentication, SQL authentication, security principals, database and object permissions, least privilege, and access troubleshooting. Encryption at rest and in transit, transparent data encryption, object-level encryption, Always Encrypted including secure enclaves, firewall rules, private links and service endpoints. Data classification, auditing, change data tracking, dynamic data masking, ledger and row-level security.

Monitor, configure, and optimize database resources — 20-25%

Performance baselines and metrics, database watcher and Extended Events, Query Store, blocking, dynamic management views, execution plans, index and query changes, and Intelligent Insights. Index and statistics maintenance, integrity checks, automatic tuning, server settings, Resource Governor, database-scoped configuration, compute and storage scaling, and intelligent query processing.

Configure and manage automation of tasks — 15-20%

SQL Server Agent jobs, schedules, alerts and troubleshooting; resource deployment with ARM and Bicep templates, Azure PowerShell and Azure CLI; elastic jobs and other automated database tasks, including notifications and failure diagnosis.

Plan and configure a high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) environment — 20-25%

Selecting and testing HA/DR strategies against recovery point and recovery time objectives, including hybrid scenarios. Native and T-SQL backup and restore, point-in-time recovery, long-term retention and cloud storage. Active geo-replication, failover groups, Always On availability groups and failover cluster instances, log shipping, monitoring and troubleshooting, with attention to which platform supports each solution.

The full bullet-level list lives in the official study guide. Treat it as your checklist:

Where DP-300 Fits

CertificationWhat it validatesWhen to take it
Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900)Core data concepts and Azure data servicesOptional first step if relational databases or cloud data services are new to you
Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300, this exam)Operating, securing, tuning and recovering Azure SQL and SQL Server databasesYou are here
Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate (DP-800)Developing, securing and deploying database solutions with SQL and AI capabilitiesAn optional companion after DP-300 if your work expands into database development and AI features

DP-300 has no listed prerequisite certification. Starting with Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals (exam DP-900) is recommended if you are new to data work, but it is optional. If you already administer SQL Server and understand Azure basics, begin with DP-300's skills checklist and focus on the platform differences.

Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate (exam DP-800) is a separate development direction. Take it when that role matches your work; DP-300 is not a listed prerequisite for it.

Before You Start

The exam assumes practical database administration experience, not just reading. Check yourself against this table. Anything unfamiliar is where your preparation should start:

AreaYou should be comfortable with
T-SQL and relational databasesQueries, joins, transactions, tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and basic administrative statements
SQL administrationUsers and permissions, backup and restore, maintenance, execution plans, blocking and performance troubleshooting
Azure SQL platformsHow Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and on-premises SQL Server differ in control and operational responsibility
Azure fundamentalsSubscriptions, resource groups, the portal, storage, virtual networks, firewall rules and private connectivity
Identity and resilienceMicrosoft Entra identities, least privilege, encryption, RPO/RTO, and the difference between high availability and disaster recovery
Automation toolsReading simple PowerShell, Azure CLI and ARM or Bicep deployments, and recognizing when to use a scheduled database job

Step-by-Step Study Plan

How long you need depends on where you start. Treat these estimates as planning guidance and adjust them to your starting knowledge and weekly study hours:

Your starting pointSuggested prep time
Administering SQL Server and Azure SQL regularly3 to 5 weeks
Experienced SQL Server administrator, newer to Azure SQL5 to 8 weeks
Comfortable with SQL queries, newer to database administration8 to 12 weeks, including foundational hands-on work

Step 1: Read the Official Study Guide

Skim the full skills-measured list once, and mark every bullet you could not explain to a colleague. That marked-up list is your personal syllabus: everything else in this plan exists to clear it. Use the October 27, 2026 outline: the English exam is updated on that date, and the only change from the April 24, 2026 version is a wording update in the security domain. Revisit the page before your exam, especially when studying from older material.

Step 2: Schedule Your Exam

Choose a realistic target date after reviewing the skills list and your available study time. A date on the calendar turns studying into a countdown, so pick one using the prep-time table above and plan backwards from it.

The exam is offered in English, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian, Chinese (Traditional), and Spanish. If the exam is not available in your native language, check the English as a Second Language accommodation and arrange any approved extra time before booking.

Step 3: Work Through the Official Learning Path

Work through the Microsoft Learn material linked from course DP-300T00-A, currently titled "Implement scalable database solutions using Azure SQL". Take notes on concepts you cannot explain in simple terms, and flag anything that needs hands-on practice. For each administrative task, note which SQL platform supports it, who manages it, and how you would verify that it worked.

Step 4: Use a Supplementary Video Resource

Watch Microsoft's free five-part DP-300 Exam Readiness Zone series with Sara El Sayed. Start with the linked planning episode and use its next and related episode links to cover security, monitoring and optimization, automation, and HA/DR. Pause to connect each topic to your own notes and replay the areas you find hardest.

The series was recorded against an older outline and shows earlier planning and security weights. Use the current official study guide for the weights and complete topic checklist; treat the videos as supplementary revision.

Step 5: Get Hands-On Practice

Use the official DP-300 labs for the relevant provisioning, security, monitoring, query tuning, automation and recovery exercises. Match each exercise to the current skills list. Aim for hands-on time with:

  • Deploying an Azure SQL database and explaining when Managed Instance or a SQL Server VM would be a better fit
  • Configuring Microsoft Entra access, least-privilege permissions, network restrictions, auditing, masking and row-level security
  • Capturing a performance baseline, using Query Store and an execution plan to investigate a slow query, and diagnosing blocking
  • Automating a repeatable administrative task and troubleshooting a failed job or deployment
  • Restoring a database to a point in time and documenting the recovery point and recovery time achieved
  • Comparing and testing backup, replication and failover options on the platforms your lab environment supports

The Azure SQL Database free offer can support many of the core exercises, but it excludes Elastic Jobs, elastic pools and failover groups. Its auto-pause option also excludes long-term backup retention. Check the separate offers and costs for Managed Instance, SQL Server VMs and any additional monitoring or recovery resources before provisioning them. Use the documentation and demonstrations for features you cannot deploy, and remove chargeable lab resources when finished.

Step 6: Benchmark Your Knowledge

Use CertiAce to benchmark your readiness module by module. The practice modules map to the exam domains as shown above, so use the module mapping and the topics behind your missed questions to identify the skills-measured areas to revisit. Microsoft also offers a free official practice assessment on the certification page. Aim for consistent performance across every module, not one lucky high score; if a topic is unstable, go back to learning plus hands-on practice.

Step 7: Take the Exam

The day before, review only your weak topics: no brand-new material. On exam day, read each question for what it is truly asking, eliminate wrong options first, and watch for constraints such as least privilege, cost, downtime, performance, RPO or RTO. Identify the SQL platform before choosing a tool or feature; administrative responsibilities and supported capabilities differ across the services.

Worth knowing before you sit down:

  • Microsoft Learn is available during the exam in a split screen. Use it to check details you need: the timer keeps running, and looking up every answer would leave too little time to finish. Browsing is limited to Microsoft Learn itself (no Q&A, practice assessments, or profile), and personal notes and other websites are unavailable.
  • You can take unscheduled breaks, but the clock keeps running and you cannot return to questions you already saw.
  • Case studies lock when you leave them: finish each one before moving on, because you cannot revisit its questions afterwards.
  • Try the exam sandbox beforehand so the question formats and interface hold no surprises: Exam Sandbox
